There has been a lot of arising matters as a result of the unexpected pandemic that befell the country and world at large and everyone has decided to fight it in different ways.
Due to the outbreak of the pandemic, there has being a total lockdown in major parts of the country and also activities has been forceful stopped and also caused people their job as company owners see it at an opportunity to lay off people using lack of
funds to pay salary as the excuse which has led to some further annoyance from the public as people can’t go about their daily activities and earn their daily living or monthly earnings.
Aside from the effect it has on the different sectors of the country the one important sector it has affected greatly is the educational sector. It is said that education is important but in this trying times the saying doesn’t seem to be true as students who are now at home as a result of the lockdown which affected schools are developing lack of interest to school work.
This pandemic has done more harm than good in the educational sector as a lot of students are no longer concerned about school and its activities because according to them “the vibe isn’t there”. As a result of this pandemic, schools especially universities resulted into online classes using different social media platforms like; Zoom, Google meet, YouTube live, WhatsApp etc. I’m a student and definitely I can say for sure it’s not been easy having to attend online classes when convenient and not. There are different kind of learners/students; the one that learn faster when taught virtually, the one who learns with physical class that contains gestures and more explanation, in this case it’s only those who learn faster on virtual classes that tends to benefit leaving aside those who find it difficult to assimilate properly. Not forgetting the primary school students and secondary school students who aren’t advanced in technology, some have been home for the past months without going to school and definitely when school resumes instead of advancing in class they would definitely go back to their former classes which would be slowing down their schooling.
Unlike the international countries that have access to WLAN, Nigeria on the other hand doesn’t even have it in their budget especially not with the state of light we have in our country. The blessing of this is that the educational system has decided to embrace the technology and in that case has aided the advancement of technology also student has used this opportunity to learn things outside school work which on the other hand tends to move their mind away from their studies and start to think of the ways to use the skills they learnt and how to start earning.
Although, there have been rumors of school resuming June ending and early July which for one isn’t certain or concluded by the Minister of Education, which has led to schools starting their examinations online and enforcing the online classes on students not minding the challenges that comes with it like; data, network, lack of seriousness from students etc. This pandemic has made schools world wide divert to technology and discover other means of virtual learning and teaching.
To end this, in as much as some students wish to stay at home and relax and do other things aside from school work some are also tired of the online classes and are not ready to take it serious even with exams of some schools fast approaching while others has been concluded, there is still need for schools to resume as soon as possible to gain the seriousness of some students back.
